With a successful IPO, Snapchat is lighting up the Internet in more ways than one with its recent widespread release of "Snapchat Spectacles", a pair of sunglasses that can take snapchat photos and videos. The sunglasses were actually released in late 2016 in extremely limited availability, appealing to first adopter consumers. Retailing at $130, the spectacles were found in Snapbots, special vending machines. However, the Snapbots constantly changed location and it became a challenge to find the product.
On February 20, Snapchat began selling the spectacles online in order to make the product more available to consumers. They are fairly customizable, and the length and prescription can carefully be adjusted by an optician. Snapchat is looking to make a larger footprint in a increasingly digital world, and bringing their technology outside of the cell phone realm is a great step in that direction.
My friend actually recently got them while he was on vacation in Colorado. He snapchatted himself skiing down the mountain and it was super cool to see. The video was high-quality and you can actually move your phone to look around, like a 360-degree video. So I think it was a very interesting invention, though I wouldn't spend my own money on it.
ReplyDeleteI think the spectacles are really innovative and a cool idea! It's kind of cool to be able to actually see things the way other people see them, not to mention the hands free capabilities. The quality isn't too bad (i'm sure it will increase with Spectacles 2.0) and the price point seems to be really attractive to buyers ($150). I think it's a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really cool idea, I especially like the challenge of finding the vending machine. I am curious to see how this continues to develop before I would ever purchase them (definitely not an early adopter!). I am also curious to see how this challenges selfie sticks and the action cam industries, as Anh said about her friend skiing. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI think it's a cool idea but I don't really think there would be that many people willing to buy these. This kind of reminds me of when the Google glasses were first announced. They seemed like a really good idea at first but they were really more trouble than they were worth.

However, Snapchat might want to think about having different lenses to choose from because I personally think the ones that they have appeal more to girls. Regardless, I probably would be interested in trying them out, but doubt I could get myself to buy them. Good blog post!

ReplyDeleteGreat post. I think Spectacles look super cool but I wonder if the novelty factor will wear off quickly. From what I've seen on my own Snapchat feed, it doesn't seem like many users use them on a daily basis. It will be interesting to see where Snapchat and Spectacles go from here!
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure people are going to really buy into this and want to spend the money on it. It'll be interesting to see what will actually come of these, but in my opinion i don't think this will be something that lasts very long.
